Connect Ohio’s technical outreach team presented results of a broadband expansion study that may be combined with a local initiative to improve Perry County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and 911 communication systems at a meeting Thursday in New Lexington. COLUMBUS – Connect Ohio staff presented Gallia County officials with information that paves the way for greater broadband access for county residents.

Twelve Ohioans were randomly selected to receive a new laptop computer following completion of the free computer-training program

COLUMBUS – On Thursday, July 14, Connect Ohio presented Elaine Hawkins of Cleveland with a new laptop computer during a short media event at Shaker Heights Public Library. Hawkins was selected as a winner in a random drawing following her participation in the Every Citizen Online program, a free statewide basic computer and Internet training program.

“The training was great,” said Hawkins. “I was trying to use the computer and Internet before and (the class) was a great help.”

Connect Ohio, a nonprofit public-private partnership, is distributing a total of 12 new laptop computers to Ohio adults who completed the Every Citizen Online (ECO) free basic computer-training program between April 5 and June 20, 2011. Program participants completed an online survey following the training and were entered into the random drawing giveaway.

“We are very pleased to be a partner in the ECO venture,” said Luren Dickinson, library director. “The Internet is actually a vast library – open 24 hours a day where people can find up-to-date information on almost any topic. It is critically important for libraries not only to provide access to the Internet through the use of its computers, but also to provide training. We are thrilled that someone who connected at Shaker Library will receive a free laptop. Libraries really do connect people to the world.”

Connect Ohio has partnered with more than 200 libraries, community colleges, education and career centers across the state to offer the Every Citizen Online training. More than 8,000 adults have already taken advantage of the training since it launched in late December 2010. The training consists of 2 hours each of Basic Introduction to Computers, An Introduction to the Internet, and Tools and Benefits of using the Internet. Participants are helped to establish an e-mail account and provided with additional training resources to help them continue to learn and use information available online. Connect Ohio plans to train a total of 200,000 Ohioans by program completion in December 2012.

COLUMBUS – On Tuesday, July 12, Connect Ohio presented Brandy Archer of Kent City with a new laptop computer during a short media event at the Community Action Council of Portage County. “It’s not everyday things like winning a new laptop happen to me,” said Archer. “Being without a job since August of 2010, I was given the opportunity to take classes at CTLC for my MOS certifications. I also took the Every Citizen Online (ECO) classes and continue going back to help the ECO instructor train other new computer users. I am hopeful winning the laptop will get me one step closer to achieving my return to the workforce.”

Connect Ohio, a nonprofit public-private partnership, is distributing a total of 12 new laptop computers to Ohio adults who completed the Every Citizen Online free basic computer-training program between April 5 and June 20, 2011. COLUMBUS –Connect Ohio has released a new report detailing technology adoption on a county-level basis for each of the state’s 88 counties. The new report follows the release of statewide technology adoption data at Connect Ohio’s second quarter 2011 Technology Association meeting in Columbus June 24. Statewide, home broadband adoption has increased to 66% from 2008, which is above the national average of 63%.

“Every new user improves the economy and their own lives by embracing computing and high-speed Internet and we are very excited to see significant increases in adoption, above the national average, among Ohioans all across the state,” said Don Shirley, Connect Ohio executive director.

Since June 2008, Connect Ohio has provided mapping and research to identify broadband opportunities for Ohio’s citizens. Since its initial assessments, Connect Ohio has worked with both public and private partners to develop programs to increase broadband availability, adoption, and use.

The new county-level technology adoption data was gathered by Connect Ohio and Connected Nation, Connect Ohio’s parent organization, through a survey of Ohio adults. The detailed technology analysis explores adoption of computers and broadband use in households throughout the state.

Below is a sampling of key data from the research.

· In Franklin County, household broadband adoption grew from 67% in 2008 to 72% in 2011.

· Crawford County broadband adoption grew from just 31% in 2008 to 69% in 2011, a 123% growth.

· Meigs, Monroe, and Noble counties’ household broadband adoption growth rate was more than 150% between 2008 and 2011.

· Among the 24% of Jackson County residents who do not own a computer, 67% state the reason is that they do not see the need for a computer and 23% say computers are too expensive.

· The average monthly price paid for home broadband service in Gallia County is $50.83, which is above the state average of $43.41.

· 49% of Hocking County residents subscribe to home broadband service, below the state average of 66%.

The compiled data for each county is available for viewing on Connect Ohio’s website by clicking on the individual county profile pages.

Twelve Ohioans were randomly selected to receive a new laptop computer following completion of the free computer-training program

COLUMBUS – On Thursday, July 7, Connect Ohio presented Doris Buchanan of McConnelsville and Becky Obrien of Stockport with new laptop computers during a short media event at the Kate Love Simpson Morgan County Library. Buchanan and Obrien were selected as winners of the computers in a random drawing following their participation in the Every Citizen Online program, a free statewide basic computer and Internet training program.

“The Kate Love Library staff members are simply delighted to know that not one, but two Every Citizen Online computer students won laptop computers,” said Blythe Schubert, director. “We never expected to have one of our ECO student’s names to be drawn in a state-wide Connect Ohio computer giveaway. To receive two of 12 winning computers is a thrill.”

Connect Ohio, a nonprofit public-private partnership, is distributing a total of 12 new laptop computers to Ohio adults who completed the Every Citizen Online free basic computer-training program between April 5 and June 20, 2011. Program participants completed an online survey following the training and were entered into the random drawing giveaway.

“Of course, all of our ECO computer students are winners, having won increased confidence in their ability to use the Internet and having gained new computer skills,” said Schubert. “We hope that many more adults in our county and the surrounding area will enroll in the free Every Citizen Online computer classes offered at both the McConnelsville [962-2533] and Chesterhill [554-7253] library sites. We encourage ECO students to take the 6-hour training more than once to develop and refresh their computer skills.”

Connect Ohio has partnered with more than 200 libraries, community colleges, education and career centers across the state to offer the Every Citizen Online training. More than 8,000 adults have already taken advantage of the training since it launched in late December 2010.
